When you’re preparing to rent out your property, there are a number of factors to consider – most importantly, you need to ensure you’re able to pass on the full cost of water consumption to your tenant. The RTA (Residential Tenancies Authority) states that you can pass on the full cost of water consumption, provided:

The rental property is individually metered, and

The rental property is water efficient

The tenancy agreement states the tenant must pay for water consumption
A rental property is considered water efficient if it incorporates the following water fixtures:

All internal cold water taps, except those serving a bath, are to deliver a maximum of 9 litres of water per minute.

Shower heads are to have a maximum flow rate of 9 litres of water per minute.

Toilets are to be dual flush, with a maximum flush volume of 3.5 litres for the half flush, 6.5 litres per full flush and a maximum average flush volume of 4 litres.
